EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN
FIRE EVACUATION AND SHELTER-IN-PLACE
PURPOSE
The purpose of this plan is to establish procedures for the safe, systematic and orderly evacuation of Largo Community Church by its occupants in case of a fire emergency or shelter-in-place, and to instruct occupants on the proper fire evacuation and reverse procedures.
OBJECTIVE
The primary objectives of the plan are to minimize and/or prevent injury to persons, and damage to church buildings.
FIRE EVACUATION PROCEDURE
In case of fire in Partition #1, e.g., Sanctuary, Narthex, Nursery, Adult Sunday School Classrooms (1 and 2), and Church Offices, the Usher Director/Lead Usher or Parking Lot Director will ensure that the fire alarm has been activated and the Prince George’s Fire Department (911) has been called.
The Usher staff will direct all Worshipers in the Sanctuary as follows:
! Ushers responsible for the back halves of Sections 5 and 6 (Orange) will direct Worshipers to the rear emergency fire exit located toward the neighboring property.
! Ushers responsible for the front halves of Sections 4, 5 and 6 (Green) will direct Worshipers to the front emergency exit located toward the neighboring property.
! Ushers responsible for the back halves of Sections 1 and 2 (Yellow) will direct Worshipers to the rear emergency fire exit located nearest the parking lot.
! Ushers responsible for the front halves of Sections 1, 2 and 3 (Red) will direct Worshipers to the front emergency fire exit located nearest the parking lot.
! Ushers responsible for the back halves of Sections 3 and 4, sound and video rooms (Blue) will direct Worshipers to the two sets of Sanctuary doors and then to the emergency fire exits in the Narthex.
! Ushers are responsible for knowing who within their area of responsibility has special needs that may require additional assistance, e.g., wheel chair, walker, crutches, etc.
The Usher staff will direct all other occupants of Partition #1, e.g. Narthex, Nursery, Adult Sunday School Classrooms (1 and 2), Church Offices and Rest Rooms to the nearest fire exit door and inform them:
! The alarm they are hearing indicates that the fire alarm system has been activated and that the fire department will be responding to the facility.
! To please follow the direction of the Usher and Parking Lot staff to move at least 100 feet from the building to the assembly area located in the lower parking lot.
! Do not worry about your children or attempt to go and get them. When you are outside the building you will be directed to the area where the children have been evacuated.
The Usher Director/Lead Usher will insure that no one is left in Partition #1. Close the door as you exit each room. Be sure to check the men’s and women’s restrooms.
As the occupants of Partition #1 exit the fire doors, the Parking Lot staff will direct them to the outside assembly area(s).
The Usher and Parking Lot staff will not allow anyone to re-enter the building without approval from the Fire Department. A bell will be sounded in the assembly area when it is safe to return to the building through the designated exits.
SHELTER-IN-PLACE PROCEDURE
“Shelter-in-Place” means to take immediate shelter where you are, - at Church or in-between, usually for just a few hours. Local authorities will instruct you to “shelter-in-place” if chemical or radiological contaminants are released into the environment.
The Usher staff will direct all occupants of Partition #1 to move to the closest sheltering room noted in red on the floor plan of the Church and then proceed as follows:
! Bring all adults, students and staff indoors and direct them to the closest sheltering room.
Close the Church.
! Have all occupants take shelter in marked corridors and areas that have phone access, stored
disaster supply kits, and, preferably, access to a bathroom.
! Shut and lock all windows and doors, and make sure window shades, blinds and curtains are
closed.
! Turn off heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems, - any systems that automatically
exchange inside air with outside air.
! If instructed, use duct tape and plastic sheeting to seal all cracks around doors, windows and
vents into sheltering rooms.
! Everyone should stay in the sheltering room(s) until officials, via public address system or
telephone announce that all is safe.
! Once the word has been given that all is safe, everyone should go outside when the buildings
heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems are turned back on.
! Follow any special instructions given by emergency authorities to avoid chemical and/or
radiological contaminants outdoors.
